Today Mideast Youth was presented at the Global Summit for Global Transformation. It was done over Skype video for about an hour. The audience seems to have enjoyed listening to descriptions of our many projects and watching the videos that we created, and it was really nice to speak to some of the influential people there. Several emails were sent to encourage us to continue our important work and we appreciate the support.

Thanks to Rebecca Self, one of the event’s organizers, for including us in this event.

Mideast Youth is one of the 15 finalists in the Staples Youth Social Entrepreneur Competition. It’s YOUR votes that will determine whether or not we will be the global winner! If we win, the prize will be used to create the Arabic and Farsi sections of this site, which is crucial for our growth.

We work hard voluntarily for Mideast Youth. We do not have an income or have any sources of official funding. We have not received any donations in many months. It’s therefore awards like these that are vital for us to survive and improve, so PLEASE VOTE!

Looking for funding

This year, we are trying to raise money and are wondering what you think. We want to beef up Afghan Press, add lots and lots of translations to the site (into and from Arabic and Persian mainly), increase original multimedia production and, simply, become more professional.

We are looking at several sources: the EU, for instance, has funding for programs that promote free speech in the Middle East and North Africa. In addition, there are foundations like HIVOS and Mama Cash. We would love to be self-funded, but face it, that’s expensive. Advertising doesn’t bring in enough cash yet either, maybe it will one day.

We have had long (believe me!) conversations about which types of organizations to approach for funding, and have all agreed that we would never accept money from a group or individual who would want to control our content or change our mission. Trust me when I tell you, if we were willing to betray our mission, we could have funded MEY a hundred times over.

Let us know what you think about our efforts to find funding. If you have ideas or recommendations, leave them here. We’ll be listening.
